Foreign Professor Theo Notteboom Delivered an Academic Report to International Students
November 27, 2015
On the afternoon of November 12th and 26th , Theo Notteboom, a foreign professor of DMU and the former president of ITMMA (Institute of Transport and Maritime Management Antwerp) of University of Antwerp, Belgium, respectively delivered to international students two English academic reports titled “Current issues in European seaports: competition, cooperation and a changing market and policy environment”, and “Making the global transport network more connected: developments in interoceanic canals, maritime passages and rail landbridges”. Some of DMU graduate, undergraduate and preparatory international students attended the reports.

In the reports, Professor Notteboom employed some famous European seaports as example to introduce the current development conditions, competitiveness, and operation system of European seaports. Also, he used the latest data to give students an in-depth analysis of European seaports’ future development trends, pointing out that seaports should realize cooperation while competing with each other to promote overall competitiveness and meet market requirements. Professor Notteboom took a holistic view, starting from the perspectives of sea and land, to demonstrate the development of global transport. After analyzing the influence caused by economy, geography, politics, and climate on global transport, Professor Notteboom introduced emerging global routes at length, and also pointed out that these emerging routes would reduce the traditional dominance of old canals, facilitate world cargo transport, and further stimulate economic development of related countries along the routes.

In the last Question & Answer part, Professor Notteboom patiently answered students’ questions, and the professor-students exchange was very exciting and information-intense. All present students spoke highly of this academic report due to the rich content and clear presentation.
