Promoting the development of marine economy in the context of sustainable development - Dr. Gurumo Tumaini Shabani, Rector of Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute in Tanzania, delivered a lecture to DMU international students

On the afternoon of May 23rd, at the invitation of Professor Zhang Renping, the teacher of the course “Global Maritime Governance, IMO and Maritime Conventions-Effective Implementation of IMO, Dr. Gurumo Tumaini Shabani, the Rector of Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute in Tanzania, gave an online lecture on "An Overview of The Marine Economy" to international students of Dalian Maritime University. More than 50 students from more than 10 countries attended the lecture.


As the Rector of Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute, a PhD graduate in International Law from our university in 2012, and a Master's graduate from the World Maritime University, Dr. Gurumo Tumaini Shabani has been engaged in teaching, research, and management at Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute since 2005, with research areas covering maritime policy and the development of blue economy etc. She has been committed to promoting cultural exchanges and scientific research cooperation between China and Tanzania for a long time, and has selected more than 10 outstanding young teachers to further their studies at our university, playing an active role in promoting the export of China's higher maritime education and spreading China's excellent culture.


In this lecture, Dr. Gurumo Tumaini Shabani conducted in-depth analysis on the definition of marine economy, its relationship with social and economic development, ocean governance, development trends, and human responsibilities. She actively shared her research results and academic views with the students, emphasizing the infinite prospects of marine economic development and the important mission of human beings in protecting the marine ecological environment. The extensive wisdom and cutting-edge strategic positioning accumulated from years of teaching management experience have left a deep impression on students, further inspiring the younger generation to establish a sense of mission and responsibility for sustainable development of the ocean.

As a featured part of the core course of general education for graduate international students, “Global Maritime Governance, IMO and Maritime Conventions-Effective Implementation of IMO, this lecture not only increases the theoretical depth of the course, enhances students' international perspective and ideological dimension, but also injects new vitality into the long-term friendly cooperation between Dalian Maritime University and Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute.
